Wow! This is great! This is an off-shoot of the traditional upland rice research done in Brgy. Kihan, Malapatan, Sarangani Province done by the IPDP in 2005. The in situ conservation for upland rice is now being realized thru the Lamlifew village museum.I hope that more ICCs will truly appreciate the value of their very important food resource- the traditional upland rice.

This is Maribeth Farnazo, the new Program Manager of the Indigenous Peoples Development Program (IPDP) of Sarangani Province. We started working together in 2001 under the Luntiang Lumad Program (LLP) under the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist in which Maribeth served as one of the Community Development Officers and I was the Program Manager. However, in 2004, under the administration of Gov. Migs Dominguez, the LLP was made into a more comprehensive Indigenous Peoples Development Program (IPDP) by virtue of an executive Order after a study done by me (formerly Ms. Josephine Carino), Romy Martin of DTI-Sarangani and Fulong George Young. IPDP is implemented under the Office of the Governor as one of the flagship programs of the new administration. The IPDP goals are: to preserve and promote cultural heritage; and to improve the living conditions of the Indigenous Peoples in Sarangani.

IPDP has the following strategic program components:
1. Cultural Development and Heritage Preservation Projects
-Culture and Arts documentation
-Sarangani Cultural Museum
-School of Living Tradition

2. Institutional Development projects
-Project Kasfala (kasfala is a system of conflict management and resolution)
-Capability building project

3. Socio-economic and environmental project
-tribal eco-villages and settlement (farm productivity, cultural enterprise and livelihood development, natural resource management, literacy development)

Maribeth by Profession is a Sociologist and was recommended to assume the position of IPDP Program Manager when I left Philippines last May 2006.I am happy that she was able to sustain the teamwork in IPDP and also among the partner agencies, individual supporters/advocates for cultural development work in Sarangani.

The launching of the first village museum is one big step for accomplishing the IPDP goals. Thank you very much for all supporters and partners!

She is Rose Bantilan, the President for the Blaan Mat weavers from Upper Lasang, Malapatan, Sarangani Province. They weave intricate designs of mats made from abundant resource of "romblon" from their Sitio. If you happen to visit Sarangani, you will truly enjoy a stop over at thier community center where they display their mats of different designs. Contact Maribeth Farnazo of IPDP for details.

This is just samples of the different upland rice varities from the upland rice farmers of Barangay Kihan, Malapatan, Sarangani Province. IPDP started a research in partnership with Mindanao State University-GenSan for the genetic diversity and the Blaan traditional upland rice research management in Kihan in 2005.

A total of 42 key farmer respondents surveyed onsite revealed that there are 108 varieties based on the Blaan farmers’ characterization. They have indigenous system of rice classification known as "Mlal fali" (short growing) and "Laweh fali" (long growing) varieties. Of the 108 varieties identified, only 46 varieties were collected and documented. The respondents also identified that there are 62 varieties that are diminishing and some 47 rare varieties are no longer found in their Barangay.

Blaan devotion to cultural ritual is closely tied to their traditional upland rice agriculture. Cultural rituals associated with their rice culture are distinct in each stage of the agricultural cycle as evidenced by different rituals that include "mabah", "bot tne", "nlaban fali", "tuke fali", "pandoman", "amgawe", and "damsu".
